I’m so excited to talk about fashion on my blog this week. Fashion, for me is definitely a way of expressing myself, being free, and loving who I am. You would think expression through fashion would be pretty easy, right? Well, for me it was not. My beautiful mother was my first influence. She had amazing style and grace, she wasn’t allowed to have the wardrobe she longed to have. My father controlled her choices. But what she taught me was beautiful. She taught me to take what little you have to work with and make it spectacular! I’ve always been a savvy bargain shopper, seeing what could be….
“Whenever you are creating beauty around you, you are restoring your own soul” – Alice Walker. This quote is so close to my heart because for so long I was told what I could do/wear or couldn’t do/wear, most of my life.
When I am creating something I feel I’m in touch with my soul. I look at fashion in such a beautiful, freeing, and liberating way. Like my mom, when I was young, I could only wear what my father allowed my mother to buy for me. I always put my creative twist on everything. During my marriage, I rarely expressed what I wanted, so the last few years I’ve been on a mission to share how fashion and personal style can change everything! Look at how many influential women through history have made a difference through fashion! Coco Chanel for one, her classic though edgy style, Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga, just to name a few!
“Dressing up is inevitably a substitute for good ideas. It is no coincidence that technically inept business types are known as ‘suits’” Paul Graham. I truly believe how you dress in the morning sets the tone for the day or for really anything you do. And, for me, when I put something on that I made or that someone else made with their personal touch, that makes me happy. That alone sets the tone for the feeling of having a special bit of magic to share through your smile, and of feeling proud you created the look you are wearing.
I’ve been creating a lot lately. It’s incredibly freeing. Since a lot of of my fashions I’m working on have feathers on them, it’s so reflective of where I am in my life. Feathers represent a lot, remembering to be grateful is just one of them. Feathers are a reminder to count our blessings and be thankful for the good stuff going on in our lives. Feathers also represent being free, being able to “fly,” not literally but in what you are doing the moment, and to truly cherish that moment. Once that moment passes, it’s gone. I want to capture those moments and make them important and memorable.
So, I’m 60 now and I feel I’m the most free I’ve ever been. I wake up in the morning and it’s usually a hot shower and a yoga class. I even love cute yoga clothes, I love putting them on, and knowing I created Tulifts’s that make my yoga sports bras look and feel great, puts a huge smile on my face. I put on a cute jacket, maybe one I made, and I usually wear my moccasins but add my boot cuffs to finish the look. I leave my home feeling accomplished already. Just because I’m 60, I don’t need to dress “60.” To be honest, I don’t even know what that means. We all should think about what makes us happy and go for it.
If someone looks at you a little confused because of something you are wearing, I just own it and smile. I even share a little bit about what I’m wearing by striking up a conversation. I bet if you, you will make that person smile too! ✨
Be Calm and fashion on! Be you, be free, create a new sense of individuality.✨ Step outside that comfort zone, you have created in your mind and shatter it into a million creative pieces, your own creative puzzle, be the you you long to be. Phoenix, fashion and feathers are all fierce and fabulous in their own meanings.
“Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” — Rabindranath Tagore. Sometime we need to “sing” rise from the ashes and start anew.
“Style is a deeply personal impression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting A part of yourself.” Nina Garcia. Never allow anyone to tell you how to present your self, it crushes your dreams.
“A heart without dreams is like a bird without feathers.” Suzy Kassem who wants a naked heart? I want my heart warm, content and full of dreams, always!
Own it, embrace it, share it with the world. It’s a beautiful step to loving you, the true, authentic you.

Debbie
