Hair Care for Silver Hair

Today on the blog, we’re talking about hair care for silver hair

I find self care is a form of meditation; a brief, allocated span of time that is for me only.
I just love to start with a good scalp massage, it’s heavenly. I use a scalp massage brush in the shower while I’m shampooing. It just feels so good, a nice warm shower and my favorite shampoo. I chose a soft rubber bristled brush which I found on Amazon. I bought a Freatech massager because you can use it on wet or dry hair. Additionally, it’s important do give yourself some scalp massages which promotes hair growth by increased blood flow to your scalp. As you massage your scalp while your hair is dry, it helps distribute your natural oils. After a scalp massage I will brush my hair with a natural boar bristled brush to distribute oils to the ends of my hair.

Since hair is not living, choosing a shampoo is a choice more than a treatment. I often switch shampoos and conditioners on what I think my hair needs for that day’s shampoo. My go to shampoo when my hair is extra dirty is Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and conditioner. This shampoo and conditioner really deep cleans and doesn’t make my hair feel dried out. I also love the way it smells, fresh and the fragrance lasts but isn’t too much. I don’t forget to bring my massage scalp scrub in the shower, it works great with a deep cleaning shampoo like this one. When I blow dry my hair after I use Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and conditioner my hair blowdries so smooth, more on blow drying later.

Carols‘s Daughter Monoi Repairing Sulfate Free Shampoo (click to shop)
My other go to shampoo is Carols‘s Daughter Monoi repairing sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. This shampoo and conditioner is extremely gentle on my hair and smells fabulous, I feel like I’m in Hawaii!! It has a wonderful tropical flower fragrance. I find sulfate free shampoos don’t suds up as well but Carol’s Daughter Monoi shampoo does a great job sudsing up. I just like a good sudsing shampoo, I feel the good suds just clean better. Carol’s Daughter Monoi conditioner, I find is almost a deep conditioner. This conditioner I leave in for about 5 minutes while I’m showering. I like the feeling of deep a conditioner once a week. This conditioner I feel does 2 things, deep conditions and the conditioning seems to last for a few days.

Purple Shampoo
To be honest, I’ve I’ve tried so many purple shampoos in my day. So if you have silver hair you know how dry and unruly it can be. Silver hair can become dull and take on a yellow tint. This happens for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons silver hair yellows is because of air pollution and using heated styling tools. Purple shampoo definitely works but if I leave it in too long, I end up with lavender hair.

I love the brightness purple shampoo adds to my hair but if I don’t want lavender hair I am careful. I will mix the purple shampoo with my regular shampoo. Sometimes I will conditioner to my hair before I shampoo and use only the purple shampoo. With purple shampoo, you also need to use regular shampoo because purple shampoo is not for cleansing but for color correcting. Currently, I only use purple shampoo a couple times a month.

Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo (click to shop)
My favorite purple shampoo is Shimmer Lights purple shampoo. I found it to be the most gentle of all the purple shampoos I’ve tried. It smells good and it’s easy to find.
After shampoo care is really important. I use a leave in conditioner. I like Beauty and Planet with argon oil and lavender leave in conditioner. I just need a little, this product helps to de tangle my hair after my shampoo.

I always use a microfiber hair towel after my shampoos. I have always avoided heavy bath towels to wrap my hair in after shampooing. When your hair is wet it’s at its most fragile and a heavy towel stretches your hair which can weaken your hair and cause breakage.

Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray (click to shop)
When I blow dry I am very careful not to pull on my hair. I use a heat protectant always. I use Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray. It decreases blow try time which means less heat on my hair. It is also very protective against heat from my blow drier or styling tools. It’s super light weight and smells wonderful. Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray feels like a dry oil treatment and doesn’t weigh down my hair and leaves it very silky smooth. I also find this product doesn’t build up on my hair. I try not to wash my hair too often. Sometimes it’s a bit difficult not to wash daily doing hot yoga but now I’m just doing my workouts at home and don’t get that sweaty. I also haven’t had a hair cut since December, that is crazy since I use to get trims about ever 4-6 weeks. As soon as I knew I would not be able to get regular hair cuts I definitely stepped up the monthly leave in conditioning treatments to at least 2 time a month or more.

Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Treatment Mask (click to shop)
I’ve been using Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen and Restore treatment mask. It comes in a little packet and it’s simple to use. I love the ingredients in this product, all natural and it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals. One of the ingredients I love is the peppermint, it’s a wonderful refreshing feeling on your scalp. This deep conditioner contains Shea butter for a really deep conditioning and apple cider vinegar for shine. When I use this conditioning packet I will put on a shower cap and leave it in for as long as I can. If I’m home all afternoon then it stays in all day. I look forward to a great haircut, a wonderful cellophane conditioning toning treatment and visiting with my hairdresser, I do miss her lots! But in the mean time, good at home hair care, staying healthy and safe is the most important thing we can all do.
