As our children get older and start their own lives, its a real treat to be able to spend precious time with your adult children. It’s funny how as your children are. When they are young, you wonder what will your child’s life turn out to be like? My daughter is now 28 and my son 25.
My son lives in Vienna, Austria and had chosen a path of Neuropsychology, finishing his masters program and living his dream. I miss him, but I’m comforted knowing he is happy and thriving.
Since she was young, my daughter was always interested in makeup. I remember her sitting in my bathroom sink while I got ready for the day pretending to do her makeup just like mom (see this video we did together where we talk about her childhood). When she was 6 years old she loved art and we put her in art classes. We knew she had talent. I always loved watching my kids be creative in any way that was possible to them.
Our family moved here to Orange County from Atlanta, Georgia and settled on Dana Hills High School for our choice of schools. My daughter enrolled into the SOCA program which offered to students who were accepted arts classes such as drawing and panting. This program was an amazing experience for her.
As Cassie was entering her junior year in college she started working as a makeup artist for Chanel, she worked at Chanel for 7 years! Cassie also did a few fashion shows on campus. I remember flying up to Oregon to watch one of the shows where she did the makeup for a fashion show that brought awareness and advocated to end human trafficking. I was so excited for her working on her passion and helping a good cause! Cassie decided it was time to go solo and left Chanel to be a freelance makeup artist, I think it was her moment she had always dreamed of.
Being together in Miami this past week, spending precious time with her and seeing her in her element at Miami Fashion Swim Week, working her magic, was so wonderful. Fashion week is stressful and there is so much happening all at once, but when it was finally time for the models to walk the runway I know she her clients proud.
I love how my children and I were able to put a very difficult situation behind us and all of us starting to working on positive new beginnings. I learned a lot being with Cassie during our down time on this trip. Seeing her passion for her work, and talking with her about what is going on in her life gave new perspective!
We also were able to have some fun at the pool. We definitely made a funny memories together, for example, we encountered Theodor the Iguana. Theodor hung out with us in the pool on his little island. This brought back good memories of childhood, laughing and just enjoying the simplest of things together.
Life is very different from what I had envisioned 28 years ago. There are good and bad parts to each one of our journeys. I believe, with all my heart, if you stay connected with your children, your loved ones, support them in their dreams, and live your best life, things will turn out ok. Now it’s time make that light shine brighter for both of us.
I look forward to spending time together again with my children, catching up with their lives and seeing where this new adventure will take us all.
